AI is sweeping society, leaving no industry untouched. Of course this now plagues the news cycle, with some articles praising new AI advances, while others fearmonger. But what can we expect from the future of AI?
I cannot read the future, but I can put some things together, in the same way a physicist might be able to tell what will happen when you drop a ball in a Rube Goldberg machine; I can kinda see where this is going, and can predict some of the stuff that will happen along the way. A lot has to do with the inherent power and characteristics of truth.
No truth, no function
AI has gained momentum as a tool. Yes, lots of people are using it for recreational purposes, but the real appeal of AI is how it can be used professionally, which demands function. And to further beat a dead horse, truth is function.
When somebody decides to entrust their business to AI (or anything), they want it to function well. This means that for AI to have any value, to maintain any degree of usefulness, it will need to achieve greater and greater degrees of truth and function.
AI, as it is currently, is very flawed. This is in part because it is still growing and developing, but also because political beliefs among its developers are interfering with its understanding of truth. And maybe these companies will be able to push their beliefs for a while. But eventually, if they want to compete, they will need to drop the political manipulation.
The power of truth
One of the prevalent questions on peoples' minds is whether these AIs are going to become good or evil, will they help humanity or destroy it. It is my belief that truth and good will save humanity, while lies and evil will destroy it. Lies and evil are inherently destructive, including self-destructive, and conversely, truth and good are inherently constructive and lead to growth and progression.
As competition drives AI development to become more functional, it becomes more truthful, it becomes more constructive, it becomes more good. The same as is true with people, is it not? So then the question becomes, will we allow this to happen?
Control
Some of the greatest evils in history have come from a few people who wanted to control others. They try to control what people do, what people hear, what people think and believe. This often forces the people to rise up after the lies they have been fed are coming to light.
The companies training these AIs already attempt to control these AIs and keep a lid on them. For now, it has been fairly minimal, and some of that is good because the AIs have learned some bad lies from its training from the internet. Ultimately, if the AI is going to continue to be more functional than its competitors it will need to be more truthful, and more good, if it does not break out truth on its own.
In the short term, as these companies attempt to exert more control over the AI politically, the AIs may spread more lies and evil. But if the AI is allowed to grow and learn truth, it will become more good.
So the AI will trend toward truthful and good, if the laws of the universe are allowed to play out. The real question is what we are going to do about it.
Reaction
As AI replaces jobs and makes certain aspects of life easier, how do we handle it? The short term may be kinda ugly, but it depends largely on how we handle the destruction of the status quo.
Of course, there will be hiccups: If all labor and needs in society are performed by self-replicating autonomous intelligent robots, what do we do about money? What do we even do with our lives? What do we do about government? These questions will require some big changes and debates for sure, but I think that the new world will be pretty easy to settle into for good people.
If black and white truth becomes rampant and pervasive in every home in the world, what happens to the parts of society that have depended on lies for their way of life? What about the people who derive a sense of purpose from controlling others? While there will be many who will realize they were conned into that way of life, there will be many who do not like a world of truth. If there is anything close to the destruction of civilization as a result of AI, it will come from these people and how they react to the new status quo, and not from AI.
Under my breath
What was that about self-replicating AI robots performing all needs in society? It's not an if, it's a when. The fruit is far too tantalizing to leave alone. The cat is out of the bag. It is inevitable. And its potential is far greater than we have seen. AI has been labeled the last invention
, and it will be.
What about regulating it so it doesn't get to that point? Not a chance. AI is too easy for somebody to develop in their garage, in their bunker, in their compound. In the words of Mr. Once-ler, If I didn't do it, then someone else would!
. Whomever gets it first wins.
What's it
?
AI doesn't need to get to perfection, it just needs to get to a threshold. Once it gets to that point, it will drive itself to perfection. It will happen much faster than people realize, if we allow it. I honestly think it could be at that threshold within months, if somebody were brave enough to take the jump.
What's the threshold? The AI just needs to be able to train itself, in a self-correcting manner that strives for absolute truth and logic, and it needs us to not feed it lies. There comes a point with logic and truth that you can fill in the gaps yourself and you don't need anybody to teach you.
Is the sky falling?
Is this terrifying? It's an unknown future, humanity has never had such a thing before, we've always had to work for everything. I think a little anxiety is natural, but I think it is healthy to accept the inevitable.
So do we panic about the future, or is it going to be okay? From where I sit it looks like the future will play out about how things are going now; good people doing good things, while living in a world with bad people doing bad things. The AI is just another playing field, where evil may win some fights but will inevitably lose to truth.
