Perhaps you have heard that our country is divided right now. It seems to be the hot new phrase to stick into articles.

Is it true?

Probably.

Is division bad?

... maybe.

The common definition of United is joined together politically, for a common purpose, or by common feelings. There is a problem with this definition. If you look closely, you will realize that to be united is not inherently good.

What do you unite with

What does it look like to be joined politically, or for a common purpose, or by common feelings? Maybe it looks like people holding hands and singing. Maybe it looks like riots and genocide. It really depends on what you are uniting with.

So what politics are you joining? Is it the nazi party? What purpose do you want everybody to have? Is it to get power over others? What do you want everybody to feel towards each other? Is it that disagreeing with you is worthy of death?

Unity for unity's sake is not a worthy goal.

Draw the line

Much of the political machine functions because of grease here and there. One politician gives a little on one issue so another politician gives on another issue. But there are some things that we CANNOT compromise on.

If your side says that murder is bad, while the other says murder is good, DO NOT UNITE WITH THEM.

If your side thinks people should be free to think and speak, while the other wants to shoot everybody they disagree with, DO NOT UNITE WITH THEM.

If your side wants to protect the people from spies and terrorists, while the other wants to enable our enemies and spread their ideology, DO NOT UNITE WITH THEM.

If your side thinks all people should be given equal justice, while the other wants special exceptions due to political, economic, or racial status, DO NOT UNITE WITH THEM.

These are cases of obvious good and evil. If we as a country are divided upon a line of good and evil, then so be it. Do not blur the line just because that would unite us; make that line black on white, and get yourself on the right side. And it's not an exclusive club, convince everybody you can to come over too, they've just gotta leave their banner over there.

Know what is good

All growing up, I had teachers slip in philosophies about questioning what is good or bad, what is moral or immoral, is there absolute truth or is it all just religious and cultural bigotry. The longer I have lived, the more I can, with certainty, say that there is absolute truth, there is definitive good and bad, and morals are not just religion and culture.

It all comes back to my old standby: truth is function. The implication here is that we must identify the function--the outcome--we want, and once that is identified there is one true recipe for how to achieve it, and then you've gotta follow that recipe (rule 2!). If you want a cake, but you end up with liver and onions, clearly you did something wrong.

There are many voices causing chaos by casting doubt on these things, but these are all snakeoil salesmen. If somebody wants to profit from lies, evil, and immorality, of course they will tell you that the alternatives are subjective, that they are merely a matter of perception and culture. Do you want peace, health, prosperity, smart children, all in one feel-good rose-tinted bottle? Well step right up, because for a special price you can have it all. Never mind the naysayers who judge it by the ingredients..

What is the special price the salesman asks? Oh nothing much. Some weaker laws here, lax enforcement there, some pocket change, and for positive media coverage. They want you to blur the line and expand their turf. They want unity, under their banner.

What's for dinner?

So what recipe are we making in the United States? It's a better recipe than is being made anywhere else in the world. Through a combination of God, truth, justice, liberty, and family, we have achieved unprecedented levels of peace, prosperity, and security. Everybody wants a piece, but they are unwilling to follow the recipe themselves, so they change things a bit. Before long they're making something completely different.

There are many people in the country as well who are trying to change the recipe, but are hoping to get the same outcome. When somebody says they want to cut out the steps where it says to cook the chicken, are you going to unite with them? There are some things that cannot be compromised.
